week five

What really caught my eye this week was popularity and rejection and all that goes along with it.  The idea behind this concept that kids have different categories that children usually fall into. The 5 categories are popular children- the kids everyone likes, rejected children- disliked by many kids, controversial children- both liked and disliked by other kids, average children-are liked and disliked by most other kids but not with the intensity of popular, rejected, controversial, neglected children-ignored by other kids. I find it interesting because you see it almost all kids that are in school, I think it’s pretty intriguing that kids know to put people into groups that way. What causes kids to be in a certain category? Is it something that they learn as babies or is it hardwired into them to segregate into groups? The thing I want to remember the most are the things that I can do to help make my children better people and not be one of the rejected kid.
What I found interesting in the article is the parent-advocating, where the parent is more of a friend than a parent.  And I can relate it to real life because the kids with parent friends tend to be more disrespectful and I see all the time at my work where the kids do something disrespectful ad the parent just acts like the friend that thinks that it is funny.
There is so much I would like to know more about. Though I think I would love to know more about was just slightly touched and it is bullying. The how’s and why’s of it. Why do kids bully? What can be done to help kid who have been bullied?  What can be done to stop bullying? There’s just so many aspects that go into the inner working of bullies.

  1. Good questions about bullying. It seems like an unfortunate, but very real topic these days. Out of curiosity, where do you work that you see kids act rude and their parents laugh? That would drive me crazy!

  2. I used to work in daycare and even in preschool children you can start to see some of this segregation and it is so sad to watch. From my experiences there is usually a leader even in these young children and the other children for some reason follow this one around but I also am curious as to if these bully leaders have a certain perental type is it just one type of parenting that leads to it or are there multiple factors and parenting types in the mix.

  3. I dislike and disagree with a friendship between parents and children. I find it hard to witness a child disrespecting an adult let alone their caregivers. But when I do see this, I lack sympathy, I feel that it is the parents fault for allowing their children to think that disrespect would ever be acceptable. It is crucial for me as a mother to engrave respect into my children, just as my mother did to me.
