week 3

The thing that made me stop and think this week was the gender roles. And specifically what was talked about in the podcast, referring the home economics book from the 1950’s, where it went into detail about what the women’s roles are and what the mens' roles are. I find it interesting because I very strongly feel as though that is how the world should still be ran with the women in the kitchen and the men working to provide money for the family. I’m not sure who I would ask but I would really like to know why as a culture we have shied away from these roles. Is it due to the fact that women think they are as good as or better than men? I didn’t really come across any information that I felt really pertained to my above statement, I felt that in all of this week’s material that it was the most closely related to my life. If I was able I would also like to look into the psychology involved I the women that do have the role that was talked about in the podcast, are women that choose that as a lifestyle psychologically happy or do they just pretend to keep other people happy? I would also like to take time to look into the different types of attachment and how it is exactly decided which type of attachment a child has? It all seems so vague in the book.
I have had a lot of experience with the secure attachment. I had a friend who had a daughter when she was young and I never really saw the attachment between her daughter and her. But I could clearly see it forming between my friend’s mom and her daughter and myself and her daughter. I believe this is due to the fact that my friend’s mom and I were the constants in the child’s life and so she formed a more secure attachment to us than with her mom.

week 2

I found the development of the baby during pregnancy to be the most interesting part of this week’s reading. The idea behind this concept is the different stages that babies go through while in their mother’s uterus. I find it so interesting because with the hopes of having my first child in the next year or so I feel it is important to know the stages that the baby goes through and the development that is in each stage while being pregnant. If I was able to talk to the authors of the book I would like to talk with them more in depth about pregnancy and the birthing process, what way of having children do they find the most beneficial to both mother and child, whether it be in a hospital or at home. The information that I will probably remember or want to remember is the affects that certain things can have on the developing baby.
The experience I have with this portion of the literature would have to do with the development of my niece and nephew. I have watched them move develop the various stages of development.  It is incredibly interesting to me to read through the chapters and see what my niece and nephew have developed thus far and how they will develop in the future. Also I feel that the article helped to make the information in the book that much more real.   I would also like to know more about the birthing process in general. With the hopes I have if having children of my own soon I am greatly intrigued by the birthing process and all the stress and joy that can come along with having children.

week one

The nature versus nurture was what I found most intriguing in this chapter. The idea behind nature versus nurture is the degree to which genetics or heredity influence (nature) and the experiential or environmental influence (nurture) determine the kind of person you will turn out to be. I find it interesting because according to the book a combination of the two can help to a child to become a well-rounded adult. If I could talk to people who made the book I would ask them as to how this idea affects certain types of people. When I say that I am referring to people who were raised in loving and honest homes and grew up to be dishonest and unloving people. From what I understand of this concept if they were raised to be honest and loving people then why aren’t they as adults? What causes them to turn out this way? I would also like to know the whys as to how it works with people who come from bad homes but turn out to be good people? Is it in people’s genes to be good or bad people?  I would also like to have endless money and time to research this subject.
I feel this chapter can be related to real life because it can help me to better understand how the children around me are growing up. I don’t have my own children yet but I do have nieces and nephews that I love to watch grow and learn. I feel that this chapter has given me a little better understand of how their brains are working and how much more love they need right now (half of them are under 2 years of age)  to know that they are loved, that I am someone they can trust, and I will help teach them as much as I can.
