this weeks material i found to be especially sad. it focuses so much on dying and how to cope with it or different ways of dying. though the thing that i think stuck out to me was the two different types of euthanasia. one was active and one was passive. active euthanasia is when a doctor assists a patient with a terminal illness to commit suicide and passive is when certain things needed to sustain a body are taken away. both types of euthanasia are very controversial. i think that if used properly and with all the correct guidelines are followed they can be very beneficial. why would you want to make someone in great pain suffer? i would also really like to know more about euthanasia and what are the specific guideline, are there other states that are going to start allowing it and so on?
i cant think of anything in this section that pertains directly to my life right now. im pretty stoked on that, not having the people around me dying and all. but i have experienced loss of many very important people in my life and the anguish felt from it is just devastating.

week nine
This
week was all very interesting. I rather
enjoyed the article about the medical care for the elderly. The basic idea of
the article was that places other than America have amazing health care for
their elderly citizens. I found this
interesting because I feel as a whole our country has a lack of respect for our
elderly. And it’s really cool to think that there are other countries that hold
their elderly in high regard.
The thing
I can most relate to is the Alzheimer’s I have a grandmother that has passed
away from it and another grandmother that is suffering from the effects of it
now. It’s a terrible disease that has a grip on so many of our nation’s older
citizens. It is a heart breaking thing to have to hear your grandmother call
you by your dad’s name. Or to watch her struggle with remembering her grandkids
and kids names that she doesn’t have a chance to see on a weekly basis.
I think
I would like to know more about Alzheimer’s and what can be done to help
reverse the effects it has on people? Or how could they help to prevent it? How
genetic is it? In my case would I have a significantly higher chance of
developing it when I reach old age? If I had a chance to do unlimited research
on the disease I think I would because no one else should have to go through
watching their loved ones go through what ii watched and am currently watching
my grandmothers go through.

week eight
The thing that caught my eye this week would have to be the how the role of work plays into the shaping of us into who we are and end up becoming. i also find it interesting in how we decide on what we want to do when it come to our jobs. When the book says that we choose our occupation to best fit our individual traits and occupational interests, does this mean any job we get or just after we choose the job well be in for hopefully the rest of your life?
I think the part about how the grandparents interact and impact the children's life relates really well to my life right now. and i dont mean by myself being a grandparents but watching my parents interact with my niece and nephew. and how important it is to both my parents and the kids to have these interactions and what it can do to help the kids to feel loved and belong. its also amazes me to watch my mom teach the kids about different things and see waht they are learning from her.

week seven
What drew me in this week was the article “Should you stay
together for the kids?” I found it interesting because coming from parents who
are still together it makes me wonder how big of a difference staying together
if you’re fighting all the time or getting a divorce and staying civil with
each other will have on children. I find the research on the mental health of
children of parents who divorce very interesting. It bring up a lot of question
for me. Does it affect the children more or less that we as a society think it
does and is it really better to put the kids in an environment where the
parents are constantly fighting? According to the article anything short of
abuse and the parents should stay together. Though I think if my parents were
fighting all the time and them not being together could solve the problem then
they shouldn’t be together. But I feel my thought may be slightly skewed
because I grew up with my parents together.
What I can relate to really well this week is stereo typing.
In that when I was younger I was stereo typed as being a drunk punk. This due
to my piercings, tattoos, pink hair and, partying, a lot of people around me
put me in that stereo type and had very strong opinions on who I was, though I did
like to party I was not a drunk I held steady jobs. I feel that this can be related to this weeks
studies by the brief details they give in the book on it.

week six
The thing I found interesting this week was the personality
type theory. This is a theory proposed by John Holland stating that people find
the work they are doing if the main features of the job fit well with the person’s
personality. He based this of finding 6 different personality types and what
career fields go along best with the personalities. The thing I would like to ask John Holland would
be why these personality types are so vague and where do I personally fit in
and how do you pick a career path off of something when you fall into so many
different personality categories?
I would say I have a lot of experience with the time school
started and how much I slept while I was in high school. I hardly slept during
my junior and senior year, this was mostly due to the fact that I had a job and
had to find time after work to do school work. I understand the concept of
going to bed early is good for your health and schooling, but what about all
the homework that doesn’t get done if you go to bed earlier instead of staying
up to do it. There would have been a lot that I didn’t learn if I would have
gone to bed earlier in the night.
The thing I would like to learn more about this week would
be what they talked about in the Frontline video about teen’s brains. Specifically
what I would like to know more about is the amount of sleep and how it correlates
to grades. That the more sleep and better sleep you get the better your grades
will be. Does this go for adults in college to or can we sleep very little and
still learn as much? I would also like to learn more about how starting school
later can be good and bad for students.
