The thing that made me stop and think this week was the
gender roles. And specifically what was talked about in the podcast, referring the
home economics book from the 1950’s, where it went into detail about what the women’s
roles are and what the mens' roles are. I find it interesting because I very strongly feel as though that is how the world should still be ran with the
women in the kitchen and the men working to provide money for the family. I’m not
sure who I would ask but I would really like to know why as a culture we have
shied away from these roles. Is it due to the fact that women think they are as
good as or better than men? I didn’t really come across any information that I felt
really pertained to my above statement, I felt that in all of this week’s
material that it was the most closely related to my life. If I was able I would
also like to look into the psychology involved I the women that do have the
role that was talked about in the podcast, are women that choose that as a
lifestyle psychologically happy or do they just pretend to keep other people
happy? I would also like to take time to look into the different types of attachment
and how it is exactly decided which type of attachment a child has? It all
seems so vague in the book.
I have had a lot of experience with the secure attachment. I
had a friend who had a daughter when she was young and I never really saw the
attachment between her daughter and her. But I could clearly see it forming
between my friend’s mom and her daughter and myself and her daughter. I believe
this is due to the fact that my friend’s mom and I were the constants in the child’s
life and so she formed a more secure attachment to us than with her mom.
I must say that it would be nice to be able to have one spouse stay home. I wouldn't personally want it to be me, however. In fact, my husband and I are struggling to settle into our new roles as new parents. He's in the army and wants me to stay home to raise our son, but I'm having a hard time adjusting to staying home. I feel as if staying home has no value anymore. Back in the day, women were praised for staying home and raising the children. Now, it's almost as if there is a social scorn on mothers staying home. People see it as "not working" when it is, indeed, extremely difficult work to manage all the house affairs and raising a child. We, as a society, can't even breast feed any more without hiding it from public. Especially since women are pushed back into working so soon. Canada offers 1 year paid maternity leave for every mother/father so she/he can focus on her/his baby. Unfortunately, I don't think the US will be supporting a family orientated sociality any time soon.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason why most parents both work also is because of finances. I don't think every family can afford to live off of one persons salary. I myself really enjoy working. I have my own dreams too of what I what like to be one day, while they do involve children, they also involve having my own career and being able to take care of myself need be. My husband also works in a high risk job and I think I need to be prepared to take care of myself and our potential kids should anything happen to him. That is strictly my opinion though. I do see what you are saying that that women who do stay home with the kids are kind of seen as " not working" and that is really unfair because doing house work all the time and taking care of children is really hard work, and it is a job that should be respected. There is a youtube video about "worlds toughest job" I think everyone should watch it, it is very cute!
