week 2

I found the development of the baby during pregnancy to be the most interesting part of this week’s reading. The idea behind this concept is the different stages that babies go through while in their mother’s uterus. I find it so interesting because with the hopes of having my first child in the next year or so I feel it is important to know the stages that the baby goes through and the development that is in each stage while being pregnant. If I was able to talk to the authors of the book I would like to talk with them more in depth about pregnancy and the birthing process, what way of having children do they find the most beneficial to both mother and child, whether it be in a hospital or at home. The information that I will probably remember or want to remember is the affects that certain things can have on the developing baby.
The experience I have with this portion of the literature would have to do with the development of my niece and nephew. I have watched them move develop the various stages of development.  It is incredibly interesting to me to read through the chapters and see what my niece and nephew have developed thus far and how they will develop in the future. Also I feel that the article helped to make the information in the book that much more real.   I would also like to know more about the birthing process in general. With the hopes I have if having children of my own soon I am greatly intrigued by the birthing process and all the stress and joy that can come along with having children.

  1. Exciting that you are thinking of having a child in the next year or so!
Prenatal development is super interesting to me as well. I was pleasantly surprised at how supportive the authors seem to be regarding non-hospital births for healthy pregnancies. I had one of my babies at home with midwives (the other was a planned home birth, but I was transferred to the hospital for a non-emergency complication), and so am obviously in favor of non-hospital births for the right situation. I only wish the authors would have cited more of the studies that have shown the safety of planned, non-hospital births for healthy pregnancies. Either route you choose, hospital or non-hospital, I feel we're very fortunate in this town to have excellent care providers for both situations!

  2. Pregnancy can be such an exciting time! It is amazing the amount of change that our bodies can undergo in such a short amount of time. Majority of the woman in my family have had home births with their children and wouldn't have done it any other way. They found being in the comfort of their familiar surroundings and having only select people being present, it was much more of an intimate experience. For both of my pregnancies I wanted to have a natural birth and contemplated having home births as well as water births. Unfortunately both of my pregnancies were high risk and I ended up having to get an emergency C-section with my second child. It isn't abnormal for many pregnant woamn to spend much time coming up with a birth plan, and creating an image of their perfect birthing scenario. I found that although planning can be fun and comforting, thing may not go as planed. That may be disappointing but regardless of the place of your birth, whether at home, in the hospital
, or in the back seat of a car, bringing a child in to the world is a beautiful, amazing experience.

  3. what aspects of pregnancy and birthing are you interested? There is a lot of information in the book about embryogenesis. Also, there is a section going through the approaches to childbirth in chapter 2.
